2021 WNY Regional Freight Plan Webinar

The Buffalo Niagara International Trade Gateway Organization (ITGO), in partnership with the Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC) and World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara (WTCBN) will present a webinar on the recently completed WNY Regional Freight Plan.

The 2021 plan is an update to the original Niagara Frontier Urban Area Freight Transportation Plan, completed in 2010, and offers comprehensive guidance to regional governments, economic development agencies and the private sector on freight movement projections, needs and opportunities over the next 25 years. Project consultant, WSP, will walk stakeholders through the updated plan, including strategies for moving forward and priority projects.

As this plan Update was progressing, the global economy was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic which introduced uncertainty about potential longer-term economic implications and restructuring of supply chains. The timing was, in the end, beneficial, as WSP’s work will help our region make sound planning decisions through the lens of post-pandemic freight movement needs.

2020 – The Year the Expansion Died?

After much pessimism throughout 2019, it now seems like the economy is bound for another year of growth and expansion … or is it? Manufacturing may still be in recession and business investment has stalled. Trade tariffs have made imports more expensive and depressed farming income. But consumers have held up their end of the bargain and delivered solid holiday retail sales. The stock market has delivered a stellar year of growth, too. With geopolitical tensions growing, will the economy be able to withstand these pressures and extend its now record business cycle expansion? Please join Dr. Alexander Heil, PhD, Chief Economist of the Port Authority of NY & NJ, in his discussion of the outlook for the national and global economy. Dr. Heil will provide his view of current economic conditions, the effects of continued protectionist trade barriers, and the extent to which any monetary or fiscal policy changes may play an important role in 2020 and beyond.

International for Start-Ups

It’s a fairly common practice in international trade that companies trade “by mistake” – meaning they received an order, figured out how to fill it, and have been using the same processes and procedures, sometimes for decades. Unfortunately, these procedures that were developed on-the-fly to come at additional cost, leave open compliance vulnerabilities and leave money on the table, without the company even realizing it.

For many start-ups and early stage companies, a viable path to growth comes through the international marketplace. Education and professional insight early on can help young companies trading for the first time create a foundation for long-term success. Join World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara, 43North and LaunchNY for an informative session on the various components of creating an international presence – whether you’re already doing business internationally, just getting started or the global market is on the horizon for you.

Sean De Clercq, CEO, Kickfurther
Rosanna Masucci, Director, Buffalo Export Assistance Center U.S. Department of Commerce

This program will consist of information regarding items and activities that are subject to the EAR, methods of determining which items require the use of a license to export, discussions about prohibitions, the use of license exceptions, license application and supporting documentation, export clearance procedures and recordkeeping requirements, and real life application of this information. This fast-paced program is ideal for those with busy schedules.

Day 2: HOW TO DEVELOP AN EXPORT MANAGEMENT & COMPLIANCE PROGRAM (EMCP): Developing and maintaining an export management and compliance program is highly recommended to ensure that export transactions comply with the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and to prevent export control violations. This one-day workshop provides an overview of the steps a company may take to implement an internal Export Management & Compliance Program.
